Allergies Q&A

What are allergies?

Allergies develop when your immune system reacts abnormally to a substance that’s harmless to most people.

The first time you come in contact with a “harmful” substance, called an allergen, your immune system analyzes the substance and stores the information without causing a reaction.

If you’re repeatedly exposed to the allergen, your immune system develops a response. However, it can take a few days for your body to recognize the substance as an allergen, which is why there’s a delay in the reaction.

What are the types of allergies?

There are different types of allergies, including:

Contact dermatitis

Allergic contact dermatitis is a type of contact dermatitis caused by an allergic reaction. Unlike other types of contact dermatitis, it may take up to three days before your skin reacts to the allergen.

Once your allergic reaction starts, it might take 2-4 weeks to clear up, even with treatment.

Food allergies

A food allergy is an overreaction by your immune system when exposed to a particular food substance, leading to painful or uncomfortable symptoms.

Some of the most common foods that trigger an allergic reaction include:

  • Nuts
  • Shellfish
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Milk
  • Eggs

Environmental allergies

An environmental allergy is an irritant from your surroundings that causes an allergic reaction.

  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Poison ivy
  • Dust mites
  • Mold
  • Certain fragrances and detergents
  • Cigarette smoke

Depending on your type of allergy, it can cause a wide range of symptoms that require different treatment approaches. At ViteleDoc, Dustin develops a treatment plan based on your specific needs.

How are allergies treated?

At ViteleDoc, Dustin conducts a comprehensive evaluation that might indicate allergies when you arrive for your telehealth appointment. During the evaluation, he spends time reviewing your symptoms and daily routine to help narrow down the source of your allergies, as well as your medical and family history.

Treatment for allergies focuses on alleviating your symptoms, as well as preventing allergic reactions. To relieve symptoms and promote healing, Dustin may prescribe topical or oral medications.

Dustin also helps guide you on ways to avoid the allergen responsible for your allergies. He works closely with you to identify the root cause of your allergies and offers recommendations on how you can protect your health if you’re unable to avoid contact.
