Sinusitis Q&A

What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis is an inflammatory condition that develops when you have an infection in the tissues lining your sinuses.

These tissues produce mucus, which should exit your sinuses through small openings and enter your nose. But with sinusitis, the inflammation causes the mucus to accumulate and block the insides of your sinuses.

What are the types of sinusitis?

There are two different types of sinusitis:

Acute sinusitis

This type of sinusitis develops when you catch a virus from someone who has the common cold. The virus travels from your throat or nose and into your sinuses.

Acute sinusitis symptoms typically clear up after taking over-the-counter (OTC) medication, drinking plenty of water, and getting adequate rest. The condition lasts for less than 10 days.

Chronic sinusitis

When you have chronic (long-lasting) sinusitis, your symptoms last for 12 weeks or longer. This specific kind of sinusitis often occurs when you have allergies that lead to long-term nasal inflammation. Structural issues in your nose might also cause chronic inflammation.

How do I know if I have sinusitis?

If you have any type of sinusitis, you’ll experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Sinus pressure and pain
  • Stuffy, congested nose
  • Runny nose
  • Thick nasal discharge
  • Sinus headaches
  • Tenderness in your face and teeth
  • Fatigue, fever, or cough

Sinusitis might also affect your ability to taste foods or smell.

How is sinusitis treated?

Through a guided, virtual physical exam at ViteleDoc, Dustin can quickly evaluate your condition and determine the most effective treatment regimen for your sinusitis.

Many viral infections often heal on their own, but Dustin can help ease your symptoms. He may prescribe decongestants, antihistamines, or anti-inflammatory medicines for acute sinusitis. If you develop a bacterial infection, he can prescribe antibiotics.

If you have a more severe case of sinusitis, he may recommend you to a specialist for treatment. Other treatment options include minimally invasive procedures to open up your sinuses. Dustin is ready to help you find the right treatment for your sinusitis.
